Chapter Ten
Tanner
Wednesday, September 8, 1954
I watched Tyler and Charlie as they walked down the hall talking and laughing. They were always together. Okay, that wasn’t quite true. I saw a lot of Tyler at home, and Charlie was rarely there. He had stopped by the evening before, and the two of them had gone for a walk. Mostly, they were together. I knew Tyler had feelings for Charlie, and I wondered just how deep those feelings went. On Sunday, they had spent the entire day together. When I got home from work at nine, Tyler still wasn’t back. He didn’t come in until nearly ten.
I could tell Tyler wanted Charlie. I knew that look. I’d seen it in my brother’s eyes before. Sometimes, he was like a panther ready to pounce. That’s how he looked when he gazed at Charlie, like he wanted to pounce on him. I knew, without a doubt, that Charlie wanted my brother just as bad. One look in his eyes told me everything. Charlie couldn’t tell us apart yet, and more than once he’d gazed at me with longing and lust.
I felt more isolated and alone than I ever had before. Nothing had changed, and yet everything had changed. I had the same friends, and Tyler was still my brother, but… things were different between us. I had little doubt Tyler still loved me, but he stiffened when I touched him and it had been a long time since he’d initiated any action. During the last few weeks, he’d yielded when I started messing around with him, but he was never the one to start things. It hadn’t always been like that. Since Tyler and Charlie had gone out on Sunday, nothing had happened between us at all. I knew Tyler needed it. I could always tell, but he didn’t try to start anything with me and if I edged toward sex, he pulled away. It was Charlie’s fault. Since he’d entered the picture, nothing was right. It was as if Charlie was Tyler’s twin now.
Charlie grinned at me as I approached my locker, no doubt thinking I was Tyler. My brother and I tried not to dress too much alike, but on some days, like today, our shirts were so similar only the most observant would notice a difference.
I didn’t like the smile on Charlie’s face. It was too friendly and too intimate. I was tempted to pretend to be my brother and tell Charlie to go away because I didn’t like him anymore. I was also tempted to pretend to be Tyler and see if I could get Charlie to talk about whatever he’d done with my brother on Sunday. I could do neither. Even if Tyler never found out, which was extremely unlikely, I couldn’t betray my brother’s trust like that. It wouldn’t be a kind thing to do to Charlie either. I didn’t like the kid, but he hadn’t done anything wrong. How could he fail to be interested in my brother? Tyler was a wonderful guy.
